What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a gentle non-invasive complementary therapy that promotes deep relaxation and wellbeing. It is based on the principle that there are points on the feet, hands and face that correspond to organs, glands and systems of the body.

By applying pressure to these points known as 'reflexes', this therapy encourages the body to restore itself to a state of balance needed for the body to survive and function correctly. AND has the added benefits of emotional wellness.

The reflexologist uses thumb and finger techniques of varying pressure and the treatment is performed fully clothed with the exception of removing socks and shoes.

Benefits

A major effect of reflexology is that it is deeply relaxing. When your body truly relaxes, it allows tension to be released and pain to be lessened.

Stress is a fact of life and also part of our normal functioning. However, when not under control, stress is often the root of many physical and emotional problems. By allowing the body to destress through reflexology, there can be huge benefits:

  • Improves digestion - irritable bowel, constipation

  • Balances hormonal system - PMS, reproductive issues, sleeping problems, anxiety & depression

  • Unblocks congestion & energy pathways - headaches & migraines, cold & sinus, brain fog, low energy

  • Improves circulation, blood flow - high blood pressure, sluggishness, may include diabetes

  • Stimulates the immune & lymphatic (detox) system to aid in self healing - sickness, injury, may include auto-immune disease, cancer

  • Helps relieve pain & nerve impulses - back pain, neck stiffness, muscle tension, sciatica, may include chronic pain

  • Flushes the body & eliminates waste - may include bladder infections, fluid retention, lymphedema

  • Relaxing - takes body out of 'fight or flight" mode and takes you to a place of rest and healing

What is the difference between massage and reflexology?
Massage focuses on the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body, mainly the muscles. Reflexology, although it often utilizes some massage, is a separate practice that goes deeper by using specialized compression techniques applied to 'reflex' points on the feet. These points relate to certain parts, organs and glands of the body which, when stimulated, trigger that part of the body and help restore balance, reduce stress and promote self healing. Both are extremely relaxing and rejuvenating.

What can I expect from a session?
If it's your first visit, I will ask you to fill out a brief health form. A typical session is an hour long. You will be guided into a zero gravity reclining chair (for mobile sessions), a pillow will be placed under your knees and heels for support, and a blanket on top of you to stay warm.
A foot reflexology treatment does not involve soaking the feet beforehand as it makes it difficult for the reflexologist to see any subtle variations in colour and texture. Instead, your feet will be wrapped with a warm towel and cleansed and your session will start. I will finish with a wonderful foot massage and apply some moisturizing lotion.

How many sessions do I need?
If your condition is chronic, a weekly treatment is best suited.

If your condition is more acute, 2 - 3 times a week is recommended and then move to weekly, then progress to every couple of weeks or once a month.

If you'd like to use reflexology to help you heal and maintain your health, I would suggest every couple of weeks or once a month. If your goal is relaxation and stress relief, anytime is a good time!

I am pregnant. Can I still get reflexology?
Yes! I am happy to help ease your swollen feet, balance your hormones, flush out that excess fluid retention and release your stress as long as you are at least 3 months pregnant. The weeks before then can be a delicate time for the body so I prefer to work with clients after their first trimester.
